The Sullivan Centre provides education for children and young people who cannot attend their usual school because of their medical or mental health needs.
A Venn Academy Trust School – Together we will… Venn is a pioneering academy trust, committed to building educational environments where all pupils are inspired to become lifelong learners who achieve the very highest standards possible. Collaborating with all partners, the Trust works with its unique settings to create world class learning experiences for all.

Attendance

The Sullivan Centre aims to maximise school attendance rates. Attendance is a key indicator of attitudes to learning and is a sign that we are actively engaging students. We work in close partnership with parents/carers to encourage the regular attendance of students. Whilst it is understood that parents/carers are primarily responsible for ensuring that their children attend school, it is our responsibility to support attendance.

Attendance is monitored on a weekly basis and students are expected to have 90%+ attendance each week. Students with excellent weekly attendance of 100% will receive a voucher. Students with attendance falling below 90% will be encouraged to improve their attendance by their Tutor and the Pastoral Team. Absence rates are discussed at each 6 weekly review and low attendance over a period of time may put a student’s placement at risk.

Parents/carers are regularly reminded that an unjustified absence is not acceptable and they will be invited to absence meetings to review the barriers and aim to move forward positively.

The Sullivan Centre supports attendance through:

  • Close liaison with parents/carers
  • A clear policy on absence and by clearly defining our expectations of students and parents/carers at the admissions stage
  • Close monitoring of students’ attendance at morning and afternoon registrations
  • A phone call home if a student has not arrived by 9.15 am unless school has been informed of the reason
  • Reviewing attendance with all agencies at a students review meeting
  • Carryout regular home visits to check on welfare and to encourage students to come to school
  • Close liaison with referring agencies
  • Attendance meetings in school if attendance continues to drop over time
  • Working closely with the Local Authority
  • A Rewards Scheme: Students with weekly attendance 100% receive a voucher

Absence

It is a parent’s/carer’s legal responsibility to make sure their child is in school each day and on time.  Although we appreciate many of our students are on bespoke timetables, it is vital that they are adhered to whenever possible as progress will be adversely affected by absence or lateness.

  • If your child is to be absent from school, you must inform us on the first day of absence.  You will be asked why your child is absent and when they will return.
  • If the reason for your child’s absence is regarded as acceptable (e.g. sickness) then it is an authorised absence.
  • If we are not informed or an unreasonable reason is given then this is unauthorised absence.  A record is kept of all unauthorised absence.
  • It is essential that your child arrives at school in time to attend the first lesson at 9.15am.
  • Any arrivals later than 9:30 a.m. will be recorded as late, unless otherwise agreed or informed.
  • If your child is absent and no information is received by 9:30 a.m. our Safeguarding and Welfare will contact the family and will carry out a Home Visit.
  • Unauthorised absences and persistent lateness will be monitored by the Senior Leadership Team.

We pride on being very creative and adaptable to encourage and transition our students into school, please don’t give up! Just talk to us!
